Purpose: What am I doing here?

“What do you want to be when you grow up?” We’ve all been asked this questions and we’ve probably all asked this question to a child we know. But lately, I’ve been asking it of myself. What do I want to be when I grow up? And most days, at almost 30 years old, the answer is that I just don’t know. Vocationally at least. There are lots of things I want to do when I grow up, they just require me to spend money rather than paying me money. I was really struggling with this the other day at work.  It’s been a bit stressful the last few weeks and I was struggling to find purpose in this season. And everything just hit all at once that day. During lunch, I ended up outside in order to get away from my desk and took a walk around the building. MSG: What is it?

The title of this blog post is one that I get all the time once I tell someone that I have an MSG sensitivity. Many people have hear of it, but still don’t know what it is, what it’s used for, or why it’s in our food. I’m hoping to shed a little bit of light on that in this post.  This is not meant to be a complete source, but to give you a starting point. So, what is MSG? MSG (or Monosodium Glutamate) is typically used as a flavor enhancer in foods. Most people know of it from its use in American Chinese food, but it was introduced to the US via Japan around the time of World War 2.  Since then, it has found it’s way into many of our pre-packaged and convenience type foods. It can be difficult to identify in foods as, while a product may not have MSG in it specifically, there may ingredients that contain MSG in them.
